>>40056366I assume you were still a kid because you clearly don't understand the context of the franchise at the time. Game Freak had a great streak going on where every game was better than the last. Ruby and Sapphire were really the only exceptions to this rule. After Gen IV, everyone was asking "Where do we go now?". How do you top Gen II remakes and Sinnoh's lore with the literal Pokémon incarnation of God? The moment the names "Black and White" were dropped on the official website back in early 2010, we were speculating. It was such a simple duology idea that went back to Gen I, though technically Black and White are shades and not colors. We started getting screenshots around April through CoroCoro, and while they were still DS games, it was fascinating to see all the new 3D areas and cool older protagonists. They were dropping new Pokémon frequently through every outlet, and yet there were still plenty unrevealed by launch. There also seemed to be a notably heavier focus on story from the trailers, the music seemed more dramatic, and presentation had improved greatly. We all wanted to know what was going on with N and what Game Freak had planned. Threads on /v/ could no longer be contained which led to the creation of /vp/. The Cory in the House DS game was a meme, but it was BW that made it really stick. So many ROMs being shared that ended up being Cory in the House. Wottergate was also a crazy time to be on /vp/. I stayed up all night for those threads.
While BW were ultimately a step down from Gen IV, they had a ridiculous hype season. I know all you kids talk about XY's hype season but it was nothing in comparison. Sun and Moon's was worse.
The thing is that hype has to be EARNED. If you have a streak of high quality games, the next game should make you excited. If you have a drop, the next game should have you put your expectations in check. If you have a streak of mediocre to bad games, you have no reason to get hyped, and that's now.
