Should variants exist? Should muh 151 remain untouched? Happy to be back to gen-4-style evolutions of old mons?

Variants are fantastic for the same reason they work so well in Monster Hunter. They add a little more uniqueness in gameplay and design, for a lower resource/asset cost as well as giving a fresh twist to old content.

If they were all we got, it would be lame and cheap, but if we get them alongside entirely new species, it allows for even more new stuff ultimately and means getting both new, old and new twists on old.

I hope it becomes a series standard.

Some of the designs look a little too silly for me. I would rather have just a standard evolution than GF butchering a Gen 1 design that is exclusive to a particular region. I like Sirfetch but Obstagoon really threw me off. You can the tell the Galarian Zigzagoon and Linoone we’re purposely made for Team Yell. Also I think it’s another excuse for GF to shove Gen 1 in our faces.

But regional variants are great. Perfect mix of neat idea based on sci-fi logic and good humor. Glad the concept stuck around.

I agree with everything you said except Megas. I think it was a good idea but most of the megas they made were wasted on Pokémon that didn’t even fucking need them like Rayquaza Garchomp and Metagross

I hate how the concept just doesn't seem to be treated seriously at all and is mostly used as a dumping ground for stupid, wacky nonsense like "dude give it silly hair", "dude make it fat" or "dude make it ridiculously tall". It's a massive waste of potential.

I disagree. Super Sayan forms is autistic fucking shit, for little kids. I know Pokemon is for kids, but going that hard into it is not necessary, as the series has been doing just fine without Megas.

And even ignoring the concept itself being lame and gimmicky, it's also a damn shame that they're all either awful putrid witless designs like Mega Lucario and Aarodactyle, or, the few times they were good designs, it just makes you go "oh i wish this was a real evolution instead, but it's not. its a bloody Mega"

I love the variants. My favorite has always been Marowak, and it getting new life with a new form was great. While I don't think every Pokemon needs some regional variation/new evolution, I'm happy for the few that do.

Most of them are great. My only real complaints are the Diglett line, Zigzagoon line, and Weezing.

Also not sure Sirfetch'd can really be considered comparable, it's more like Steelix or Weavile as a mostly orthodox cross gen evo.

MonHun subs used to be shit back when they barely changed anything, but nowadays they're usually a lot better from a gameplay standpoint, and I've always liked them from a lore standpoint because they make the world feel more real.

I would hope that Sirfetch'd is a similar situation to the Sinnoh Cross-Gen Evos, in that it's simply a "permanent" addition to Farfetch'd's line, and from the new games onwards, may be obtained just about anywhere Farfetch'd can. Obstagoon is a different scenario though, being something of a "step-further" from the aforementioned "regional-forme evolutions" like Alolan Exeggutor. Will we see Obstagoon anywhere else without the use of software like Pokemon Home to send over a Galarian Zigzagoon? Will there ever be a chance of Hoennian Obstagoon, or equivalent evolution?

Variants should have been introduced earlier, they make sense and give a more dinamic feel to pokemon.

Judging by the precedent they're now setting: removing actual modelled mega-evolutions and primals, and introducing more new models as a regional gimmick in the form of gigantamax, I'd say no, it is quite likely this sort of pokemon could be abandoned in future games. This annoys the completionist in me who wants a living dex with every pokemon and form in the games. But hey, they're culling the dex anyway, so whatever.

Nah most of the subs are still the usual basic shit (new element/ailment + new moves), only a handful of them are good cause they expand on a move/gimmick from the base monster.

Regional variants are by far my favorite "gimmick" in years. I'd happily take more and more of them each gens even if it means less new pokemon.
...But that's on the condition that they all can be transferred in other regions in the future, and variants aren't used as a way to justify cut Pokemon.

Just bring back 4th gen evos and don't have autistic evolution methods to evolve them. That'll be ideal. Have fun with unevolved Galarian Linoone and back to regular Farfetch'd once we get to Gen 9 shills, not that they have a chance to come back next gen.
