I think most people round here mercilessly pick on him because blindly hating the fat kid is the epic thing to do.
Even the major gripe about Festival Plaza was a fault of the games as a whole rather than the character himself.
Mamane/Sophocles is unironically more likable than some, especially Lillie, in both games and anime. He's just a fun character all around.
