They didn't hog the screen as much as Lillie did, and she isn't even a fucking trainer. You can actually fight the XY friends so they're actually relevant to the gameplay even if minimally.
Yeah you can remove the XY friends and nothing would change, but you can remove Lillie and the game would improve tenfold.
