The tradition of "waifu gym leader follows along" or "waifu protag follows along" would have continued being a staple. We didn't have to have Pokemon Special adapted or anything, but it would have kept things a lot more interesting to have a new personality every region to travel with instead of boring old never-changing Ash.
Fuck, man. I'm really sad that this didn't conceptually come to fruition. Gold and Whitney adventures through Jhoto sounds fuckin great. Especially the region finale when Gold faces off against Ash on Mt.Silver to replace the vs Red fight. I remember that as a kid, I envisioned it as "vs Ash" anyway.
