You could argue DP was built up to be a finale. But everything after is just random nonsense the writers decide to experiment with. Ash's finale is supposed to be beating a literal who novice and another literal who Charizard fanatic? Yeah fucking right.

DP works as a finale battle wise. AG's use of retired characters also would have worked but the battles were trash. BW ruined everything, XY was so isolated that it wouldn't work as a traditional finale
Don't know what to say about SM, it's league is just as isolated as XY and it didn't come off as a real struggle until the end

XY wasn't actually isolated though. BW screwed everything up but they tried fixing it, XY was a continuation of that and it had references to the past as well. SM was basically the first time they also didn't have Next time a new beginning before and honestly feels more isolated.

As for the league, it didn't come off as a struggle in anyway throughout the whole thing.

OS -> ADV -> DP -> SM is the best order. BW and XY are retarded messes where BW makes Ash too retarded and XY strips Ash of all of his personality.

Except SM actually makes a bigger mess of continuity, BW's only fault was trying to be a reboot of sorts to which they went full blast on trying to fix, and in XY Ash was acting like a guy who has been traveling around.

Ash in OS want be complete "pokemon master, champion, etc." but fails, then Ash in AG start training actually but loses, yet Ash try again in DP but loses again. Ash finally say "Fuck This" (for now) and decides rest for a while in his house along with the mother. Suddenly win a travel to some place called "Alola" and SM starts.

Ash still has personality. It's his character that's boring since his overall arc was over in Johto.
Ash has been boring since AG. His snarkness was the best part of his personality in OG.

FWIW, XY last episode definitely felt like an ending. Usually the Anime has Ash being told about some new region and he should go there. No such thing exist in XY

Fun fact: the last moves learned by Pikachu is Iron Tail and ElectroBall in AG while Ash was training with May, since then, he lacks of new attacks. SM is the exception of this becuase Pikachu has turned ElectroBall to ElectroWeb, plus Z moves.

The entire movie set from M1-19 was confirmed canon and within one continuity.

XY felt like the finale because of alola marketing, Serena amour, the prophecy, and Ash's more matured character. You only make fun of xyfags in retrospect because you forgot what it was actually like pre-sm. Nobody knew what would happen after BW, and SM proves he COULD have won. If anything, I bet people were thinking the third part of the brown eyed ash trilogy would be the final and actual most hypest. Most people just thought xy was a giant step in the right direction, if anything just for how it directs its battles as early as pikachu vs sirskit

Previous Ash's failed and at their worst he had his ego shot and it would be played at his expense, this anime doesn't have the talent behind it necessary to pull off an introspective Ash Ketchum
