With the Alola League finally over, has this battle been topped as the objectively best battle in the entire anime? If not will it ever be topped?

I remember watching this on that Twitch Marathon last year thinking I was in for some incredible shit by forums and chat hyping it up. It's a battle with great build up and piss poor execution. I don't why it's still held in high regard.

Call me boring, but I cannot stand how Pokemon battles are animated between Season 2 up until DP. First season had highlight moments like pikachu vs surge and it was a novelty to simply see at the time.

After like 40 decades later, they were still animated the exact same except more formulaic and with souless art. Wow use tackle, swooshy backgrounds, horizontal panning impact shot of a still of the actual hit for 3 seconds, wow cut to the pokemon flying away backward. XY and SM are guilty of this too but they are the first to show glimpses of what could be with having highlight moments that show true pokemon battles. Undeniable moments of good animation and steady pacing. Anything with dawn or may is something ive visually seen not dozens but hundreds of times. XY switched it up and early on you felt its excitement because it felt it was directed at least somewhat differently.

Anyway as a result I cant even sit through the whole dp league. Its boring as fuck, and it doesnt even top the charizard vs blaziken which already looked stale at the time of its release

The battle itself was pretty fun, on par with a decent gym battle honestly, but nowhere near Ash vs Paul or Ash vs Gary and a relatively poor way for him to win, considering the league lacked much in the way of credible serious trainers and had so little buildup. The fact that it was a 3v3 rather than a full 6v6 also hurts for a league level fight.

I'd say that undersells the ways DP advanced things with incorporating contest style movement into attacks; it's fine to hold this opinion of course, since pokemon is objectively a low budget production most of the time, but I'd still say it's a bit harsh. Especially when if you look beyond those flaws a bit, the strategy on display in sinnoh is honestly really enjoyable to watch.

Fully agree. Up until season 2, pokemon battles were simple (traditional art, no crazy special effects etc), and to make up for that simplicity they had to be creative. Thats why those battles had so much soul, it was way more than just charging at the enemy. From what i've seen, everything after season 2 is boring as hell.

It's a long runner and it was produced as a cheap marketing product. So it's kind of expected that it really wouldn't have good animation.

Fortunately, OLM has been in the lab trying to take the Anime to new heights. It's not like it happened out of nowhere. They've been planning shit since Gen 4. It finally came into fruition in Gen 6.

Back in 2005 I used my allowance to buy the final Johto season on DVD. The disappointment of revisiting the Gen 2 anime (and especially the Gary vs Ash battle) was massive. Also, rewatching the Twitch Marathon last year makes you realize that Gary was a loser jobber that didn't even show up more than a handful episodes in both Gen 1 and Gen 2 combined.

There’s nothing wrong with the Regi theme but they used it for almost every single battle in that retarded League, and wasting Ash’s victory song on a flashback was super gay.

Ash v Alain came close, but it didn't top Ash v Paul.

It's not, literally everyone that has actually watched it since it originally aired agree it was pretty lame. The praise comes exclusively from nostalgiafags that dropped the show during gen 3 and haven't watched it since that just remember it being hype at the time.

Their battle at Lake Verity was significantly better, as there was a higher level of strategic ability. Also, Paul used his signature Pokemon here, as opposed to the league, where he used random mons.
