I feel like Pokemon is one of the few videogame franchises that started years ago where the nostalgia boner is towards the early games.
I mean, look at Metroid. Nobody really cares about the first games (and people disliked second one), they consider Super Metroid to be pinnacle of the series.
Zelda? Ocarina of Time. Mario? I'd say Super Mario 64, possibly with one of the NES games closely behind.
What makes them different from Pokemon?

Sonic references Green Hill all the time. Sonics 1 and 2 get a lot of focus in general while 3&K is less focused on, besides Mania and somewhat Generations.

Because Pokemon's success relied more on the fun characters, less so the gameplay. The merchandising is huge compared to the games because everyone remembers Pokemania and the mons that came with it.

Those franchises moved on from their roots and innovated and built upon the games with pretty much every entry, Pokemon is still pretty much the same shit it has been for 20 years, with almost every new Generation being a 1 step forward 2 steps back sort of situation.
The widely considered "best games" in Pokemon's lineage of titles are the ones who keep old shit and add onto it, but even those ones still have things that were needlessly removed.
GameFreak doesn't have to worry about actually trying to make good games when TPCi has their back covered with merch, and this has become even more evident ever since they stopped caring about making good games.
Welcome to Pokemon post the DS. Unless employees that still give a shit about the quality of the franchise are able to get into the drivers seat, we're gonna be stuck with lackluster, mediocre titles that do the bare minimum of any modern day RPG and nothing more. And people will lap it the fuck up cause it's Pokemon and that's the cool thing, at least since X/Y where all the normalfags that had abandoned the franchise came back after Pokemon hit the mainstream again.

It was a few different things.
The transition to 3D, the popularity of the 3DS at the time, kids who played Pokemon back in the late 90s, who probably would've been YA/late teenagers back during the GBA/DS era were now in College/out of college and weren't immature enough to give a shit about the games people were playing, thus they could like Pokemon again.
The Kanto pandering was pretty useful as well.

for the record I think they mean Samus returns not super metroid. Most people seem to not care that much for samus returns given it's a game boy game being compared to far better games in the series.

Sonic Adventure heavily references S3&K. Other than including Angel Island itself, it has 2 zones from S3&K (Ice Cap, Lava Reef), and it references the fact that Eggman tricked knuckles in Sonic 3.

Also this, aside from the fact that Pokémon games have always been stagnant in whatever console they release, GF doesn't seem to want to change the formula that much. Sure Mega Evolutions and Z-Moves are pretty good but it does not make up for the lack of innovation, they don't really need to abandon the franchise's core mechanics like turn-based Combat they just need to spice up the formula
Stuff like pressing a button to avoid a little of damage (As seen in Mario RPGs), the Pokémon's moves draining a bar instead of using individual PPs, the ability to make a button combination or a pattern to make extra damage, this is all stuff that could potentially make the game a lot more smooth and fun to play but they do not seem to care and neither does Nintendo as they don't make any quality control over Pokémon Games

You tell me? I don't see a difference. People are still plenty nostalgic for those old games. And since when did people not like the second Metroid? Didn't they just make a remake of it even?
Other titles didn't ever change characters though. It's always Mario. It's always Link. It's always Samus. Pokemon has new pokemon every generation. Nostalgic people don't want change, they want the same game with tweaks or gimmicks. Mario64 was a slippery mess and OoT was just grosser looking inferior Lttp (and then every game through SS was just Lttp until botw, which was just the first game again). But they're still familiar despite being garbage. Even though pokemon is the exact same formula, it's different characters, so there's no nostalgia value to it.

Not that guy, but megas an z-moves are gimmicks. They change very little to the gameplay.

The special/physical split and abilities are probably the biggest innovations they ever made to the formula.
