I got curious and went back to when it was first added. This is the what it looked like. It seems like some kid added it back in 2004 and people slowly cleaned it up until it became something resembling a real article. Now it just sticks around because it predated Wikipedia redirecting every Pokemon search to a master list.

No it didn't, you fucking retard. It was the first Pokemon game in full-blown 3D. That was literally all it needed to sell like hot cakes. It remains the best selling 3DS game and is almost on par with D/P sales. People lost interest AFTER that, but fortunately Pokemon Go happened and made more profit than the combination of Mainline game sales since Gen IV.

Interest in Pokemon gets resparked every time a new generation comes out. There really hasn't been much variation in sales between the first games of a new gen since RS (although DP did sell SLIGHTLY better than most gens, but not by any significant amount).

Yes, BW were technically the lowest-selling debut games of a new gen, but it was by such an insignifcant number that BW2's relatively high sales for a third version mostly counter-balanced it (BW and BW2 combined slightly outsold SM and USUM).

Because it wasn't a third version. Bw2 was a sequel, a totally new game. Usum was the same game as SM with some edited cutscenes and fixed issues, released only a year later. And even casuals were pissy because of the Stars rumor and took it out on usum for existing.
And it still sold more than BW and Bw2.
