It sure was crazy how much sprite work Game Freak put into the series.
>Blue had entirely new sprites from Red and Green
>Yellow had entirely new sprites from Blue
>Gold and Silver had entirely new sprites not only from previous titles, but from each other (with a few exceptions)
>Crystal added animations to every sprite
>Ruby and Sapphire had entirely new sprites for every Pokémon
>FRLG had new sprites for all Kanto Pokémon (and Teddiursa for some reason)
>Emerald added new frames for every sprite and animations
>Diamond and Pearl had entirely new sprites
>Platinum had new sprites for all of the new Sinnoh Pokédex Pokémon as well as all Gen IV Pokémon in general
>HGSS had new sprites for all Gen I and II Pokémon
>Black and White redid every single sprite to have constant motion
>New back sprites every Generation, minor alterations between games, platform palette changes like with the SGB, and regional sprite differences like DP Registeel or GS Jynx
>Every Pokémon had menu sprites with BOTH SIDES properly accounted for (look at asymmetrical Pokémon)
>Every Pokémon in HGSS had overworld sprites with numerous frames of animation for different angles
>Shiny variations too
I used to think that the point would one day come where Game Freak would no longer be able to include every Pokémon solely because of how often they update sprites for hundreds of Pokémon. I gave XY the benefit of a doubt because making models, skeletons, textures, and animations for over 700 Pokémon + forms seemed like a Herculean task for their first 3D game. I understood the future-proofing idea. But that led to fuck-all and now they're cutting Pokémon despite using the same models between games. I don't understand why this will happen for all games going forward. There's got to be a point where they get all Gen II-VII models to HD hardware, so why can't they be included in future games then?
