Now imagine if you are the company and 5 million people of the core fanbase that bought USUM didn't buy your overshilled game. It's never about the absolute amount of money, they have billions, it's about expanding your base. It did worse not because it didn't make as much money as usum but because it tried to appeal to the million of Gofags in an attempt to integrate them with the 15 million base and it failed.

Number of copies is whatthey look at, not how much made.

Games like Battlefront 2 were basically counted as failures in the publisher's eyes despite still selling 8 million copies very quickly. Doesn't matter what it made, only what the number was.

When compared t every other remake, LGPE has actually sold more units within the same time on the market as any of the other remakes as of a few months ago, leaving aside the higher price and smaller install base of Switch compared to the 3DS and DS in their time. So even by the metric of copies sold, it's actually doing pretty fantastic. The games have also outsold every 3rd version release since Gen 3 onward though still early in its life.

Because as we all know, a game is successful if it sells more. Oh wait that is the counter to your idea. You pretty much spell out how to counter your argument easy. Think of how much more money it could have been if truely successful.
Here, I do the math for you

(16×10^6)×60= $960,000,000
Doing the math again
$960,000,000 - $660,000,000 = $300,000,000

See 300 million more dollars more if it was close to a true success. It didn't fail big, but it wasn't a true success.
