I will never understand what's so cool about Charizard?

Yes, I love dragons, but this one is just a doodle with nothing special on it.
Yu-Gi-Oh! had much better dragons while Charizard is just an orange giraffe with wings with no features, details or anything noteworthy.

Surely being the only starter that have been shilled to no end for 22 years made it popular but c'mon, it isn't that special.

There are tons of popular Pokemon across every generation but Shitfreak only cared about Kanto and especially Charizard.

Heck, Blastoise was extremely popular, but the lack of shilling killed Blastoise and now look at it, it became forgotten.

No, there are shills in every generation some come and go like Togepi and Piplup. Some stick around like Charizard and Lucario. It really depends on how popular the Pokemon ends up being outside of Gamefreak pushing it.
I'm not particularly fond of Charizard, always been a Venusaur fan, but attributing purely to Gamefreaks bias is unfair. It's a well-designed creature with lot's of fans, and has enough appeal that non-fans recognize and like it. Of course Gamefreak will continue to push it.

He was usable pre-gen IV before Stealth Rocks as well, so really he just had a bad 2 generations.

Though he's back to being omega shit without Megas unless Gigantamax Zard is OP
