Self-assigned ancestry is shoddy evidence.
The English ancestry in this country is at a severe undercount. Even in 1980, it was at 26%, the largest ancestral group, and that didn't even include the Scottish, Welsh, Ulster-Scotch, or Irish (Who are just Papist Britons), as well as those who started the current trend that has led to the creation of the "American" category (British hicks), and the supposed reduction in English ancestry down to 8%.
All good sense indicates that Britons, or at least British-majority whites, are at least half of all whites in the US.
And excluding certain areas, those numbers would soar even further.
