Once during the field trip to Kanto, and again when Ash was showing Oak pictures of a Pokemon he discovered (Meltan)

Dude, they were coping and badly with how the past series had ended. They were desperate to try and explain it couldn't be Ash after Kalos as they knew Kalos Ash and he'd likely be still taking his defeat as badly as they were, not gadding about an island chain somewhere on holiday.
