The government didn't have to advise Nintendo, GameFreak, Creatures and The Pokemon Company to only release Pokemon games on the weekends so that all of Japan doesn't try to skip school/work just to play it, unlike Dragon Quest.

Mainline Dragon Quest games aren't a yearly thing like Pokemon, so regardless of which edges out the other in popularity, Dragon Quest games generate a LOT of hype. Even if it's a Switch port of 11.

Why do japs love Pokémon and DQ so much? They are literally the same games, every time, with tons of reused content to booth, as well as the absolute bare minimum of improvements and constantly use nostalgia as a selling tactic? Since this is a Pokemon board, I'll use that as a comparison. I honestly can't think of two mainline Dragon Quest games that are even as similar as Ruby and Diamond. Dragon Quest does a surprisingly good job of making sure every game offers a unique experience. They just look very same-y on the surface.
