The characters don’t do anything significant. Even when they are at the Pokémon School most of the time they are just conversing on what’s currently going on instead of actually learning something or doing genuine class assignments. You can complain about “random OC in random area or town” all you want, that’s the working formula for an anime with an adventure concept in the story. Several anime do the exact same thing. Ever heard of Dragon Ball?

Also, these “comfy” episodes OP mentions come too often and the actual development or plot episodes are far and between. Lana got her first episode in Episode 5 and didn’t get another one until 32. Mallow got her first episode in Episode 18 and didn’t get another one until 39. Soph got his first episode in 26, and didn’t get another until 41? Do you see what I mean now? 15-20 episode gaps for all the characters major episodes, and that was just the beginning, the gap gets wider in SM’s second year as focus begins to put on specific cast members while the others are left with nothing. All the while, the most significant thing that happens during these gaps are maybe sometimes a game character debuts or there’s another rushed villain arc. Everything else? Complete and utter filler.

Other characters exist in Alola but the show actually cares enough about them to bring them back and develop them in other episodes.

Like this character would just be a generic COTD in any other series but in SM she shows up in like 5 different episodes.

From episode 1 of SM to episode 20 almost every development episode was tied to Ash and his Pokémon. Each classmate got their obligatory introduction episode which only takes up 5 out of the 20.

From episode 21 to 39, every classmate once again got one episode for themselves, while the rest were focused on Ash or were just filler.

From episode 40 to 60, majority of the episodes focused on Ash and Lillie, while Lana and Soph got one episode, Mallow and Lana shared one, and the rest were filler.

From episode 61 to episode 80, once again, every classmate got one episode to themselves and the rest was filler or focused on Ash.

81 to 100 Lana got two episodes while the rest got none. Mallow and Lillie had small moments in one episode each though. The rest was once again filler or focused on Ash.

Finally, from 101 to 127, every classmate got one episode each, Lana and Soph shared one, Mallow, Ash, and Lillie shared one, and the rest focused on Ash, filler, or Lillie. Every episode onward is focused on the League and everyone who competed.

So over the course of 138 episodes so far, each character besides Ash and Lillie have gotten 4-7 episodes. Significantly less than Clemont who got the least amount of episodes out of the XY cast, that being 14. But muh random OCs taking focus right?

Thats the episode where both Popplio and Chargabug evolved, but there's also episode 119 (vivkavolt race) and 120 (kyogre), so you are missing some episodes

The XY cast was 4 people, SM is only two more than that. Every 20 episodes a member of the SM cast either got one episode, shared one, or none at all. Why when they didn’t have to deal with random COTDs stealing the spotlight? Why did none of the SM girls catch another Pokémon until 3/4 into the show? Why were each member’s episodes so far from their last? Why did characters have to share the spotlight with others and why did only the Mallow and Lana flashback one make sense?
