Balance reasons when the first stage is too strong to be the first one, so you can put pre-evo into an earlier route.

In gen 2 it was so the player is rewarded with a new Pokemon if they experiment with breeding, a new mechanic.

Past that it's completely pointless and only made to sell toys and pander to girls.

Some of them get moves that they only learn through these stages.

I still await the day we finally get a shared Tauros/Miltank prevo. Its something that would genuinely add to the game for the sole fact that it would mean Tauros could finally get egg moves

why is Riolu counted as a baby? Aren't all the babies added to evolution lines AFTER the original line?

Also... there's more to pokemon that just battles and stats. Baby pokemon add flavor to the world. And they probably appeal to young girls

Marketing gimmick to introduce breeding
They SHOULD be a way to make strong pokemon appear earlier or give pokemon that were overlooked a sort-of new chance (never would have used a Chimecho without Chingling) but GameFreak is dumb

They were trying to appeal to girls, not even joking. Gen II was the merchandising gen, and you can tell, by the designs. Don't get me wrong, I think Johto has some of the best designs, but it's definitely made to appeal to a "broader audience". As for the later babies, they just wanted to follow the trend I suppose. Munchlax was pretty popular, I remember.

Nearly all of them look fine and would be perfectly fine as regular first-stage 'mons.

Tyrogue had the branching evolution which was cool, honestly a much better way of dealing with a similar concept to the volbeat/illumise split and I think a couple of the others were sort of inventive ways to put some moves you might want behind the barrier of your pokemon being weaker than normal at the start of your training, which is of course ruined by switch training/exp share but that's the nature of the beast

They only started doing this a few years after the idea was introduced, and very inconsistently at that. XD was the first, DPPt didn't handle it very well, and BW2 were the first to really apply this, even if it only extended to three lines.

Tyrogue was necessary to tie the Hitmon line together and make it possible to get them all with just one.

Aside from that, they are completely useless, grindy bullshit at best.... And that was in gen II. They make even less sense in future gens where hold items determine if they hatch already evolved..... Pure retardation.

Khangaskhan/Marowak could use a baby form to tie those lines together.

Khangaskhan in particular was a gross oversite for a baby form. I doubt anybody ever thought "It's a shame Clefairy isn't a middle evolution", but people have been saying that about Khangaskhan, and even Cubone, since Gen I.

For the purpose of evolution I guess? Or create a Nidoking equivalent of Khangaskhan and let the baby evolve into Cubone is happiness drops below X, Khangaskhan/Newmon if happiness increases above X. Or just make Khangaskhan genderless.

Gamefreak loves convoluted as fuck breeding/evolutions and Gen 1 rehashing, they should be all over this.
