Makes me wonder if whoever did the final promo art was some kind of rookie intern that kind of failed to get features across well.

Only for some, and there's been multiple artists for the stock promo art so far, judging by the different styles.
take, who did Aether Foundation in Gen 7, has done all the gym leaders so far.
Sugimori I think has only done Leon.
Then a third artist with really aliased lines who I don't recognize who has done the rest.

I don't get it either. The only Pokespe female I didn't find interesting were White2 and Y. Coincidentally (or not), I didn't particularly care for Black2 or X either.
