Why do the sprites from gen 1 and 2 look more menacing and intimidating like actual monsters instead of the stuff we have right now?

Most are exaggerated in Gen 1/2, Gen 3 looks dopey, Gen 4/5 looked amazing with their peak sprites and excellent shading
And then we transitioned to 3D with pastel colors and barely any shading

Huh...

Anyway, pic related. Charizard actually looks like a westernized dragon just coming out of his lair, compared to the more "humanoid" looking we have now.
Is this the fault of japanese catering to a more eastern audience instead of the western one?

HGSS sprite the best. Lack os neck sucks in early gens. Saturated colours in XY are generally bad.

Usually the best sprites are from gens 4-5 with few exceptions from gens 1-2. Gen 3 just sucks with its spritework most of the time.

Doesn't make sense. When I played pokemon everyone loved pokemon like Rhydon, Nidoking, Blastoise, Gyarados, etc. They looked like actual cool monsters. No one gave a fuck about pikachu, that was mostly more for girls.

I think they're just catering towards Japanese mostly cause japs have made it their lifestyle.

Because the sprites in that era were wildly inconsistent and off-model due to them saying "the anime is how things SHOULD be depicted." It's why when Gen III rolled around Masuda slapped Sugi and the art team upside the head and said "stop designing for the anime and start designing for the sprites/models!"

Why are you even bringing this up? Ga-Ole just uses the same models and animations with higher resolution textures. It's exactly what GF is doing with Gen 8. It doesn't fix what's inherently wrong with some of them. Blastoise is still a fat shit and the same would still be true for Feraligatr.

They were designed to look good as 2D images. Many Pokemon from the early games looked better in 2D imo. Of course, that isn't to say that they can't look good in 3D...

I always disliked the color changes of Salamence. Something about the dark blue body and the contrast with its orange wings made it look really cool in Gen 3. The new color scheme is more accurate to the official artwork so I guess it's what they always envisioned it to look like but man it just doesn't compare.

Agreed, HG/SS is the best Feraligatr sprite by a large margin to me. Gen 3’s Feraligatr looks really dopey to me, and as a kid I thought his gen 2 sprites looked terribly ugly. The gen 2 art for Feraligatr looks great but it didn’t translate well to the sprites imo, where he looks really top heavy and weird and like he has virtually no tail. It’s mostly a problem with the Gold and Crystal sprites, the Silver one is much better imo.

Wow you're right, I've always noticed how different Salamence looks between Gen 3 and 4.
I made a quick edit where I gave the Gen 3 and Gen 4 sprites the body colour of each other.
I think the best sprite is the Gen 4 one with the Gen 3 colour scheme.
