There were barely any normal type pokemon in Johto so Game Freak decided to cut some of the beta pokemon to add Stantler, offering players an option for one of the rare few Normal types in Johto.

Mixed attacker with Intimidate, screens, and four status inflicters. It isn't GOOD, but I have used it for hijinks before and I find it one of the more interesting early gen smorgasbord Pokemon.

Yes, but why? Is there some Japanese custom about deers fooling people with their antlers or something? I always felt like there was more to his design than just "deer but with antlers that mimic eyes"

I think it'd be a good, awkward middle evolution. It's like all of the other awkward, useless, single-stage gen 2 mons except it's not small enough to be argued as a first-stage so they just left it be.

Also deer antlers are pretty scary in general cuz fully grown can easily gore you, although not much in japanese lore about specifically them mesmerizing, just lost in translation puns like everything

I've actually always wanted to use it but they haven't put it early enough in any recent game. Furfrou is a straight upgrade and they gave us that before the first gym so I'm not sure why Stantler is always given so late (if given at all).
