This is exactly why the show should have a new protagonist each region. If it was Hilbert/new OC character this "joke" would have landed much better but instead it leaves the audience scratching their hsads confused how 5 regions in Ash still doesn't understand type interactions, let alone what pokemon he owns.

This by far the worst version of Ash. It's like the writers realized they progressed Ash too far in Sinnoh and awkwardly dile him back down.
