Most abilities for gen 1 mons are boring. Hold items is a poor system, too much shit to keep track of. Lack of steelix and kingdra is the biggest downside.

These games give me the same feel as Gold and Silver, especially the Sevii islands so you are right, they are among the best.

I actually love FRLG. The Kanto campaign is still fun to me, because of how open ended it is compared to other Pokemon games. I think I enjoy it even more today than when I was younger, since now I know about all the tricks and optional ways to progress. And the Sevii Islands was a cool post-game adventure for the time. I was never super impressed by GSC Kanto, since there wasn't really a-lot to do there.

Gen 3 spriteart and soundfont are some of my favorites. UI is super clean. Every sub-category of item has its own case, which is even better than some of the current games. I always liked how things like the TM Case and Berry Pouch are visualized inside of your bag. FRLG was also the formal introduction to the National Dex...RIP.
