Then you have the cancer of item trading, FRLG's dog trio, version pokrmon only (if you and your friend both owned the same cartridge you were fucked)
Gamefreak specifically designed pokemon so you need more than one cartridge and gameboy, which is why nintendo was shilling pokemon so hard, win win for them.
Even now die hard completionists just buy two cartridges and consoles, because gts you're obviously going to get fucked over in an item trade.
Though having the privilige of 2 ds' made pokemon platinum so easy because I had a fucking alakazam under my own name that would shit all over everything.
