Yes and I originally skipped them when I thought I was done with the series. Came back for X and Y and man was that a disappointment. Eventually got White 2 and had a great time, so Gen V is my cutoff between the good and bad side of the series.

Are they worth picking up a copy of? Skipped picking it up back in the day but I've still got Black lying around if the sequel's that good

Same for me, I skipped these ones on release cause I was burnt out and just wanted a 3DS entry. Came back to them last year and they were awesome. I was surprised at how many things debuted here, and not in XY. Like O-powers, Shiny Charm, and Join Avenue being a better version of gen 7's festival plaza to name a few. Insane content.

Last great Pokemon game was FR/LG, or R/S if you don't count remakes. GameFreak is utter shit at writing stories and evil teams, and from Emerald onward kept forcing them on you.
I actually still have hope for S/S from what I've seen so far. It's just a shame that it's eternally going to to be "the game with no national dex". It's the first time I've had hope for a Pokemon game since the complete and utter shit that was B/W.

Absolutely. B2W2 are really nice counter balances to what Black and White offered leading to a strong generation overall without either sacrificing what they strived to be. Side by side it looks like

Less story focus, but a new take two years later

More focus on gameplay with new areas to explore, medals to collect, revamped gyms, leaders, and gym themes, and post game such as the Pokemon World Tournament and Black Tower/White Treehollow for grinding
