I like the EXP share system now but desu back in those dark days it was nice leveling Pokemon one by one. Gave you a BOND. EXP share was for evolving side trash or making your weaker guys catch up. Now we don't have that much free time to grind out everyone, which I'm finding out during my Diamond run trying to level Pokemon during my free time at work or at home.

Sun/Moon was well balanced for the XP share. Back in X/Y they clearly had no idea what they were doing but I'm sure Sword/Shield will be balanced fine. XP share was never intended to be a "difficulty toggle". You can still self-impose challenges, like choosing not to use items, choosing not to evolve your pokemon, choosing not to use TMs, playing as a nuzlocke, etc.

It's literally easier to do for models than sprites. You have to draw sprites. They literally already have all the models and animations done already for the first 7 gens.

Well, if we assume Milo is the 1st gym leader, we've seen his ace was level 19, which is pretty high for a 1st gym. I think it's pretty likely they've tried to balance the game around permanent EXP share. Whether they did a good job of it is something we can only tell after we've played the game though.
