Strawman aside, I seriously don't fucking get it. Just having 18 gyms isn't a good thing. The promise of good content doesn't mean it will actually be satisfying. I understand being excited for the prospect and having hopes that they'll do it right but people are treating this like an automatic gift from the gods.

I've played through gen 7 a few times and never felt overleveled, always using 5-6 Pokemon and almost always running from wild encounters.

Even if I'm on-par level wise with NPC Pokémon I feel overpowered because they're already gimped by their shitty AI, terrible team composition, crap movesets, lack of EVs, lack of held items, etc. Staying several levels below them is one of the only ways to even the playing field that doesn't feel like I'm really handicapping myself.

Well yeah, but difficulty and level curve are different things. You make the level curve balanced first and then adjust the difficulty to fit it, not the other way around.

No gym puzzles is probably for the best. For every gym that did it well, there were 3 that either didn't have them at all (usually towards the beginning) or were tedious, annoying "mazes" involving shitty teleportation pads/arrow pads or shuffling around in the dark.

Even the ones that were done well like the water gyn

Even the gyms with good puzzles like the last water gym in the Hoenn games become tedious as fuck when making a single mistake forces you to do a tedious amount of backtracking
