What Pokémon do you consider to be over-designed and why? Pic related is my answer because I get the concept but it just looks like they glued a bunch of bricks onto rhydon. I don’t like how busy and clunky it looks.

Too many of this pokemon's elements take away from it's sharp and sleek base design. The random spikes and the detailing on it's bib kill a pokemon I would have otherwise loved.

If they couldn’t make it look like a steel type without making it so messy, then they should have just stuck with ice. Could still have ice blades on its fin and an ice crown, but no stupid claws or spikes to half-ass the steel type justification like lucario

I know "looks like a digimon" is thrown around a lot but with all the decorations and horns and spikes and trailing things this would legit fit perfectly alongside the more serpentine dramon. Would have looked pretty Dan sleek without the trailing glowing whiskers and eye makeup, which both seem pretty tacked on compared to the cohesiveness of the rest of the design, which is pretty sweet.

-Prinplup can learn Metal Claw doesn’t have visible claws.
-It’s pokedex entrees heavily puts emphasis on slashing with it’s flippers/wings, not it’s claws
-If it needs to slash with them, it’s metal flippers would get in the way.

They have no purpose on the design other than looking cool.

Au contraire, design creep is a very common problem in making characters (and monsters). Like Masuda the hack said, you can't just add a bunch of horns and spikes and shit and not give a reason why. Part of the appeal WAS the more grounded and believable designs.

Not them but I'm not exactly fond of too much brightness either and Sinnoh's palettes do feel oversaturated to me. My opinions on quite a few designs improved vastly when seeing them outside of the games.

I think the colours work great. I'd rather have something bright over something dull and bland. The amount of blue/purple coloured pokemon in the dex especially help to make the other pokemon stand out and imo it makes the dex feel diverse and fun.

Ha ha, damn - I kinda just feel the exact opposite. All the blues/purples dull the entire dex and make nothing pop out to me when they're all put together, so the dex ends up feeling samey and bland.

Why does it have random blue lines running across its body?
Why does it have a random red thing jutting out behind its head that matches literally nothing else on its design?
Why does it have a bunch of ridges on its back?
Why does it bend down to attack when it doesn't even seem like its hips can flexibly?

This design is a fucking trainwreck of unfocused concepts cobbled together.

The problem with rhyperior i that he's just a fatter rounded out rhyhorn with orange plates. It doesn't actually feel like even an evolution like rhydon to rhyhorn or even magmar to macargoand electabuz to Electivire. Its only real like evolutionary "edition" is are the tail and gun arms but the design doesn't do enough to focus on these new thematic elements. The body doesn't compliment the club swinging tail and the arms arent really a big enough focus nor show off "big o cannon arm" aspects enough for it to be obvious. The design just doesn't compliment any of the new ideas. The armor doesn't add to/compliment anything, it being fat doesn't add to/ compliment anything else, the guns dont tie into anything else, the tail doesn't. Heck, it even detracts from the theme of the other two evolutions since its the only one who's not focused on the horn as a main focal point. It needs a shit ton of just reworking.

when you make the red o the claws and axe a similar and non apposing color you miss the point that the pointed parts are meant to look super threatening and strikingly stand out. That's why hazorous's body is such a dull but countering color to the bright redish color of the sharp bits. It's meant to make them stand out and look threatening. By making the skin so similar you lose an important part to making the design look imposing and powerful.

Rhyperior is somewhat overdesigned, but it's real glaring issue is the total lack of structure. It stands out wildly from its pre-evos in terms of shapelessness. 'perior's legs seem bolted on as an afterthought to the undersides of a torso too large for them. The upper arms are hilariously tiny and skinny relative to the massive, chunky, again rather formless forearms. The next has vanished and take the chin with it. The spine of this creature must be totally compacted. There's no aerodynamicity, being overly broad and without contour.

What's interesting is that if you were to read out a bland description of Rhydon and Rhyperior on paper, you wouldn't necessarily catch much difference. Yet in the subtleties lies an enormous gulf that yawns between a design that is fun yet functional and just awkward.

I see nothing wrong with this. Of all the things awful with ORAS, the ancient/mega upgrades to the core trio were all improvements. There are dreadful Mega evos like Mewtwo Y or Scizor by comparison.

Fucked up the tail which is its central asset, the eyes which are critical for cuteness, and added an ugly and unecessary nose. Meanwhile only the second tail is an innovation to the design, the rest is just "Aipom but larger". Weak as hell. Not necessarily overdesigned however, just bad.

The Kyurems are highly designed and somewhat unnecessarily, but as complex fusionmons they work well enough.

Necrozma legit is way overdesigned, although the simple colour scheme helps reel it in from hyper-awful.

The designs of Stakatak, Xurkitree and Blacephalon, and the other Ultra beasts in general, just don't want to be Pokemon. It's not the level but the KIND of detail that kills them. Nintendo is attempting to sell another kind of game that it'd clearly rather make but doesn't want to test on its own merits, so is selling through the more established pokemon brand.

Gen 4 designs are just awful. Bloated overdesigned trash and all have a dark lifeless navy blue color scheme. Gen 3 had more decent designs which is saying something and gen 5 had a lot of stinkers but at least they had some cool shit like volca, hax and dreigon to even it out. Honestly the only mons from gen 4 that are good are like Luxray and Toxicroak and maybe a few others.

I don't quite agree but there is definitely something very off with Gen 4 Pokemon specifically that brings down even otherwise solid designs. They just look more artificial overall, with unnecessary stripes and spikes.

Get rid of the blue lines, change the blue eyes to white, and Stakataka could easily pass as a Gen 1 or 2 Pokemon. If it was in the middle of the Pokedex and didn't come with a special label you wouldn't think anything of it.

Yea they kind of look like McDonald's toys or something. Gen three started that trend with the brighter less natural colors and weird inorganic lines and details. Plasticy I guess. Still some solid designs in those gens though.

The arms ruin it for me. They just look so stiff, like they can only rotate up and down but not right and left. Also maybe get rid of the round looking fat suit and make the armor look more like an armored vest and armored belt. Give the legs and midsection between the vest and belt the same Rocky rigid texture as the tail.

If you ask me, togetic looks so much more better than togekiss in every way. I wish it evolved into a humanoid pixy/fairy, keeping the same theme as togetic instead of turning into a fat stiff bird thing.

Some pokemon are just meant to look more "monster like" so not all of them will be appealing looking. I just love how it's face looks like a castle while also looking perfectly natural.

It's supposed to be a fat and pampered cat. The ears are a bit eh, but it's a very interesting pokemon and probably the best catmon because of how unique it is.

It's far from generic. It's a simple and straight to the point pokemon that perfectly represents Sea slugs while the forms are cool ways to differentiate the two parts of the region. This is the first time I've seen someone dislike Gastrodon.

I don't get why people hate them for being fat. It makes them more intimidating looking. A skinny Honchkrow wouldn't look anywhere as cool as the buff chest Honchkrow we have

It look cool as fuck when attacking with it's mini noses. Plus the nose is just a reference to maoi heads while the moustache is a reference to iron fillings. It looks goofy and badass at the same time
