Complete clusterfuck, even mons of types that are superficially similar, like rock/ground/steel, get fucked because they are designed to do completely different things. The type matchups also become way more linear and less fun as a result.
At the very least, add Null and Aether to flesh it out.

Rock is a little controversial but I ultimately decided on putting it where it was because it's either that or steel, and steel is the odd man out in the offensive fire type.

We're talking about Pokemon types. How does something like Fire and Ghost contains water? Now compare that with literal Grass type. Also, Grass type have several absorption and healing moves (which is basically recovering cells).

It wouldn't be an even split. It would be a case by case scenario. Fire types that are colored animals, like Growlithe, become water type. But something like Slugma, which has no biological components, would be a fire type. The situation would be the same for ghosts and etc.

Yeah, those were the types I was least sure of. I ended up putting Fairy with earth for the reasons >>40211610 mentioned, and Bug in air because many fly and are generally small, lightweight creatures. Can absolutely see reasons to flip them, though.

The advantage of this is the ability to use the types as stats instead.

1) For Pokemon: Individual pokemon are not "Fire type" but rather have a "Fire stat", higher or lower as per the fieriness of the specific species.

2) For moves: Moves may have say 30 Fire damage, 40 Earth damage and a paralysis keyed to Air.

This generates a satisfying degree of enticing complexity while maintaining the inviting simplicity of 4 elements.

There would probably need to be an emphasis on combo or multi-stage attacks based on pokemon/move typing in order to get effectiveness leverage over opponents within any given scenario.
- an earth type move which creates a field or weather status based on the type that used it
- using a certain earth move on a fire pokemon who had just used a special attack might boost target's defense but lower speed (lava flesh)
‐ wind move sets up for a water move for ice (field status or attack that reduces speed)
You'd end up with a lot more potential for mind games, field bonuses/hazards and double battles would be even crazier, but you might also quickly run out of unique combination mechanics. Reducing everything to 4 elemental types would definitely not justify a roster of 800+ pokemon, even with combo attacks everywhere. You'd probably need some extra gimmick in there somewhere just to promote more side-grade options.
