I can also store as many mons as I want and create multiple save files easily and never have to worry about something like pokemon bank shutting down.
For competitive, yeah simulators like showdown are the way to go. I can't imagine wasting my time on shit like battle spot where it takes 30 minutes to play a 10 turn 3v3 match. Boring as hell. So much more fun to be had with simulators for competitive, and emulators for in-game. Literally zero reason to buy a cartridge ever again.
