According to a recent episode summary, Tapu Koko suddenly appears to battle as Kukui's sixth member to battle pikachu. Not that Tapu Koko was captured by Kukui but he just shows up to battle Pikachu.

Anon, what do you not understand? Starters, all of them, are shillmons by definition. They're the face of every gen, even more than the cover legendaries. They get the most merch, anime time and exposition than literally every pokémon except anomalies like Pikachu and Lucario. It doesn't matter if Charizard is more popular than Blastoise who's more popular than Venusaur. The latter is still a massive merch whore by the virtue of being a starter.

Aside from Charizard X and unfezant, burastoo has a pretty solid roster of mons, tyranitar caught my eye specifically as you rarely see many trainers in the anime with it
Kukui's is really solid, can't dislike it, lucario is super basic though, Hawlucha would have been a more appropriate choice.
