If you're going to reveal 1, 2 mons tops you could at least just have the decency to drop a trailer instead of making people sit and stare at a screen for 24 hours to maybe see something.

This isn't "Fan engagement", it's wasting people's time. The people who actually want to buy the game would be just as excited to see a new trailer with 2 new pokemon drop. In fact, they'd probably be more excited because it wouldn't be spread out over so many hours. You'd generate more buzz all at once than a slow buzz generated by this, peppered with people tweeting about how boring it is, producing negative buzz. It's bad marketing, just give people a trailer.
