I really like the direction of the Orre games, and it's sad that we don't get more spin-offs of this scale. It was like a core game taking place in the same universe as the handhelds, but with it's own unique campaign and a greater emphasis on the central conflict. And unlike, say, Sun/Moon, the game's story driven nature doesn't get in the way of the experience.
Take the opening act for example, in pic related. The 'capture tutorial' for XD (and for Colosseum), is neatly woven into the progression of the story. You're in the middle of a kidnapping, and you have to snatch Teddiursa to try and save the Professor. It's also Michael's first exposure to Shadow Pokemon, as well as his Snag Machine. This keeps the flow of the adventure in motion, while acting as a soft tutorial for anyone new. A game like SM would rather pause the game altogether to teach you what a Pokemon even is, as if you don't know what game you're playing. Completely talking down to everyone.
Ugggh, I miss Genius Sonority...
