>>40256462Legendaries and Mythicals were always separate groups. Legendaries in Japanese are "densetsu no Pokemon" (Pokemon of legends), while Mythicals are "maboroshi no Pokemon" (Pokemon of illusions).
Basically Legendary Pokemon are those that are spoken of in the various legends and historical sites of a region, and their achievements and presence are extremely well known and documented.
Mythicals, conversely, have the majority of their lore hidden away from the populace, are not documented (if at all), and are not certain to exist. Very few people in a region are aware that Mythical Pokemon exist in the first place.
That's why Cobalion, Terrakion, and Virizion - the actual Swords of Justice that are discussed as being the heroes of the Unova brushfires a few centuries ago - are Legendary, whereas their student - the orphaned Keldeo - whom they taught their sword techniques to, and whose contribution to Unova society is not as documented, is a Mythical.
