Also, I kinda feel sorry for Hypno, and to some extent, Mr. Mine. They're the only two fully evolved psychic types that fell to the wayside in RBY because the alternatives were lightyears ahead. Exeggutor completely invalidates Hypno's existence as being the superior slow bulky psychic-type with a sleep-inducing move.

Abra was really hard to catch in gen1. Mean Look didn't exist. Arena Trap didn't exist. It is easy to reach that point in the game without even knowing Sleep exists (Remember that this is gen1 and most kids playing it have never played a RPG in their life.) And even if you managed to catch one, you need to trade to evolve Alakazam. So yes, it far surpasses Hypno, but you don't need to go through multiple hoops to get Hypno. It's easy to catch and evolves naturally. And Psychic in gen1 wasn't just strong because the mons were strong, it's because the second half of the game is almost entirely mons weak to Psychic. So Hypno was a perfectly fine pokemon.

In terms of in-game use, Kadabra was better than Hypno because it outran damn near everything while being tied with for having the 8th highest special stat. You don't need bulk when you have Pokemon that take neutral damage to Psybeam keeling over, and Recover makes it self-sufficient with how you have everyone using low power moves even to the endgame.
