i'm 30
i never played pokemon
my daughter wants to play pokemon after seeing a commercial for it
i think i'll buy her a switch/3ds
also seems like a good chance to get into it myself
would be a good bonding experience between us
how do i do this? which games should i start with? which systems will i need? how much money will this cost me?
i don't want to start a thread on /wsr/ because you lot should be the experts

Buy a nintendo ds, and get a gameboy advance game and/or ds game. All used. It's cheaper than the switch. The games are harder than the newer ones meaning they'll hold her attention longer.
When I was a wee lad my dad bought himself a copy of the version adjacent to mine so I could get trade evos and version exclusives.

Assuming your daughter is a younger child like around the 6 or 7 year range, Go For Let's Go Pikachu or Let's Go Eevee.
They're on the switch and they have a two player function so that you could play together with her, so you can test things out while only shelling out for one console. If she continues to show interest then you can move on to the other games in the series.

Let's Go was made for someone like you. Though I wouldn't spend the $300+ on that, personally.

A 2DS at $150 can run most iterations of Pokemon. The original games are available on Virtual Console for $10 a piece. The more recent 3DS games can be found used for around $20, and probably offer the most accessible experience for someone new. The DS games tend to be harder to track.

Then get her Sword/ Shield and for her to play with her friends -- you can customize your character and there's co-op stuff to do. That can be her own game and she can show you what she did with her friends.
