In all of the past seasons, when Ash has gone to the "final" and lost, it really wasn't the final, correct? What he was always in was a tournament, the winner of which gets a shot at challenging the Elite 4 and Champion.
So Ash has never really faced the E4 or Champion of any region thus far. And even if Ash did win one of those battles from seasons past, he wouldn't have won the league at all -- just the tourny that gives him the ability to now challenge the E4.
Am I right so far?
And if so, how is this different than what just happened? Did Ash finally beat the tourney and challenge the E4/Champ and win?
When I used to watch the anime, they never made this distinction clear: that winning this tourney doesn't actually mean you have won against the champ. But I feel like people think that it means so.
