Ampharos: You meet Mareep early in the game and it's possible to catch it before the first gym which is a Flying gym, which makes Mareep super-effective against it. A lot of the early pokemon are of the same few types while Mareep stands out as an early Electric pokemon. There's a lot of Water and Flying enemies throughout the game so he never stops being useful. And he's fairly strong so I didn't feel the need to replace it when I encountered other Electric pokemon.
Meganium: Coverage tends to be the winning strategy in the main game but I built me Meganium as a wall with Poison Powder which was useful when I encountered a particularly strong enemy. I actually couldn't have won against Lance without it as his level 50 Dragonite could outspeed all my pokemon and Meganium was the only pokemon capable of surviving an Outrage.
I did have fun with HGSS and I'm going to do the post-game now.
