You're a kid, maybe in the first year of high school, who just got a Pokemon. There would be a small selection of Pokemon to choose from, including some starters, babies, and Pikachu.
You live in a small city and can explore the whole thing. To paste from a little notepad document I have:
Your home, your neighborhood, your high school.
Rival high school, other neighborhoods.
Stores and shops. Apartments and hotels.
Train station.
Hospital, museum, maybe college.
Radio station.
Pokemon center and Pokemart.
Little league gym and false desert underneath.
Laboratory and huge greenhouse jungle.
Mountaintop tundra and cabin.
Haunted mansion and modern mansion.
Forest, mountain paths, cave system, great river.
Plains and farmland between towns, beach village and coast.
Industrial sector and port area.
Industrial train yard.
Carnival and arcades.
Main temple and smaller shrines around town.
Maybe a college or a swamp?
Also, there would be one very strong Pokemon of each type, and no more than two, considering dual types. With the hermit on the top of the mountain would definitely be a powerful Abomasnow. An old man, the wealthiest in town, and builder of the new mansion, as well as financer of many areas in town, would have a huge Dusknoir.
Etc.
I've put a good amount of thought into this so far.
