I've never played USUM is there that much of a gap in timeline between the original Sun and Moon?

It's an age range.
You have to stop being a Trial Captain once you hit 20, but you have to be at least 11 to participate in the trials at all.

I don't even think GF pays attention to timeline shit anymore. Mina couldn't be a trial captain even assuming BW takes place immediately after HGSS.

LGPE is in the timeline/universe with Mega-Evolution, which, considering Blue, seems to take place two years later than RBY. Dunno if that has any effect on things.

Details? LGPE are looking like they pull an ORAS: they're in an alternate timeline where Mega evolution exists and certain things differ, inclusive of the original protag not having defeated Team Rocket.

Red and Blue never got Pokedexes, for starters. They were also never League Champions (they're called Champions for beating the Elite Four, but never reigned as part of the League, so Red never usurped Blue). That alone breaks a ton of continuity with the Johto games at the very least, because Red and Blue got timeshifted for the new protagonists.

Actually, I'm not sure on the number of years, sorry. Might be wrong on how long, but there is a clear gap and a bit of dialogue mentioning how lucky the protagonist is to have a Pokedex as Oak had the Blue and Red using paper when they'd started.

It does break continuity if you assume they take place in the regular timeline, yes. It doesn't seem to do so at all when you sit it in the timeline where Mega evolution exists, where no Johto games currently released sit at all.
