It does a lot of things the other PMD games don't; recruiting is a lot tougher, more like a proper roguelike with permadeath. You'll have to keep a mon through the whole dungeon for them to actually join your team.

Skitty's generally considered THE Rescue Team pick even for normal play, and in Sky anything that isn't Phanpy works, while Riolu's speedrun niche (boss-slaying in few turns with Focus Punch) doesn't shine as much so he's not as important; female mons are more valuable for extra evasion in Explorers.
