They probably learned form gen7 that releasing every new Pokémon and their evos makes discovering what the new Pokémon are less exiting

Honestly this.
In every single gen, there was always some other catchable Pokemon that I enjoy way more than the starting Grass, Fire, and Water types.
Last gen it was Shiinotic, Baile Oricorio, and Araquanid.
