Pokémon Red and Green were released in 2006 as opposed to 1996, so we are now 10 years behind. Other than that, nothing has changed, so technically we’re currently in late Gen 4. What is the Pokémon community like?

if everything else is the same and thhe graphics are updated to match the current year? pokemon is a more niche product with a mostly very young fanbase, considered a cutesy digimon knockoff aimed at children too young for scary and sexy monsters. if it's still got the old graphics, it'd have an older fanbase who are into it as a fun nostalgic retro style game the same way people like how undertale looks, a cute nod to their childhood. pokemania never happens, maybe we';d have had digimania in the 90s instead. the pokemon community would probably have all been digimon fans first.

yeah definitely seen as a cutesy digimon knockoff then. people would see it as the preschool alternative to digimon and monster rancher games. small niche community of adult fans, the same sort who insist mlp has a lot of depth for a little girls show, enthusing about the hidden depth and darkness of the plot below the skin of cute round monsters and a message of friendship.

Probably having a similar following as Yokai Watch has now. As others have said, it would be seen as an imitation of Digimon. I don't think Pokemania would take hold in 2006.

Came here to post this. The only reason digimon gets a pass for the obvious portmanteau is because it was already in the works before Pokémon. But Pokémon released first and the other was accepted at it's own thing by being "of that point in time"

i guess a lot of the designs too would have been either seen as ripoffs, or as references to other games, all the creature tropes and yokai references that pokemon did early and other series have done since.
