Yeah, no. Kanto was just okay.

The region itself is incredibly boring, most of the pokedex is mediocre at best and a bunch of the more interesting pokemon are locked behind in game trades.

Kanto is a pretty good region though. It's got real dungeons and quite a bit of nonlinearity in the mid-late game. Don't let the fatigue of it being accessible in four generations in a row get in the way of that.

the only remotely decent KANTOOOOO game is frlg, and even that suffers from no physical/special split, no cross-gen evos until postgame, and how boring kanto still is as a region. rgby is a broken mess and legpiss is downright insulting.

kanto's "dungeons" are mostly bland crap with only one or two floors. it has nothing on the level of mt. coronet or even ice path.

there's minor sequence-breaking in an otherwise linear game. other regions do the same thing.

technically the only ones that are set in stone in gen 1 are the first and last. you can do third before second, and like you said 4-7 in any order AFAIK.

Yeah it does, Seafoam Islands is on par with Ice Path, Pokemon Mansion is great, Team Rocket's hideout in the Game Corner is also good and Silph Co. is rather impressive for its size. There are still many dungeons in newer games that haven't managed to outdo Seafoam and the mansion.

As a 10-year-kid when RB came out who still holds a very fond attachment to the first games, I can easily admit that Kanto is mostly empty, boring, and lacking in character and cohesiveness. I love the Pokémon designs and gym leaders, but Kanto itself is nothing to write home about.
