Right now I'm thinking of Araquanid as the lead. He's the bulkiest and can hence set up Sticky Web or Rain Dance for the team. He can also hit problematic Fire or Rock types hard. If I go special, Ice Beam coverage would be useful against fliers who resist Thunder (although maybe not coming off base 50 special attack)

No, you should lead with ariados because it's the least useful and has both sticky web and toxic spikes.
Don't bother setting up rain dance, it only really helps araquanid. Galvantula has compound eyes for thunder.

See I thought about that, but I'm worried that, outside of water stab, Araquanid won't be able to fill the shoes of a physical attacker. Ariados might be the biggest liability, but it has SD, Sniper, and the best attack of the three.

Probably for the same reason cartoon characters tend to have 3-4 fingers instead of 5; it would look too crowded. That being said perhaps there’s something fundamentally wrong with all these designs if they had to make less legs on a SPIDER because it looked bad. Still love them though I admit.

1. 8 legs triggers arachnophobia way harder than 6 or 4. Besides, they’re Pokemon, not real spiders.
2. Like the other anon said, cartoon laws mean you’re probably gonna opt for less detail so it’s easier to draw.

Araquanid with Z-Stockpile is hilarious. I use it on showdown and it surprisingly well. You just stockpile and if your HP gets low Z-stockpile on the third one. Then all you have to worry about is flying and electric. Tanky as fuck, liquidation does insane damage with a base damage of 170 with water bubble. Leech life to heal up or you can do aqua ring and use Lunge alongside for your bug move. If you use Leech life go poison jab or something. Hell throw double team in there to make it even easier.

this. I have arachnophobia, i even have nightmares about spiders. But pokemon ones? Spinarak was even my fav pokemon for a short period of time: cartoony spiders while retaining the name change just enough that your brain not only enjoys them more easily, but if you are scared of the real thing it triggers a feeling of relief and attachment, also giving you dopamine compensation for the feeling of "getting over your fear"

1st trial run with Araquanid lead. Ran into a Ferrothorn lead which severely hurt both my Araquanid and Galvantula before taking it down. Properly weakened, they finished me off with an Ampharos w/Rock Gem followed by a Rampardos. Double Rock treatment.

Got rid of Rain Dance per the suggestion earlier, had an idea, and replaced it with Soak. This turned out to be a good idea so far, setting up Galvantula to start sweeping and also getting rid of potentially problematic types like Ferrothorn, Venusaur, etc.

It might be blasphemy but it's working so far. Scald still does a fair amount, plus the burn chance is nice. Even more important it allows Araquanid to unthaw since it usually needs to stay in against ice matchups.

The fact we can't have a full spider team with 6 unrelated pokémon is disgraceful.
This image also made me realize we got a spider on each even-numbered generation, so we should have a full spider team only by Gen 13? SHAME!

I made it a tad further before my Araquanid was flinched to death by a Aerodactyl lead. My Galvantula only managed a lucky dodge of Rock Slide to take it out, but then a Mudsdale swept the rest of my frail team with Earthquake. I didn't have enough offensive power to overcome it's bulk in two turns.

I'm going to have to rethink this. Maybe I'll try an Ariados lead tomorrow.
