That’s a fucking lie, I was here when megas were leaked and everyone was shitting their pants excited. A few people raised questions about which mons received them, and the quality of a couple designs, but they were the minority by far.

God that was one of the last times I remember vp being majority happy.

Do we live in alternative realities? Half of /vp/ was screaming that it was ripping off Digimon and that they would rather see real evolutions while the other half argued that Digimon didn't invent super forms and that they were a great idea. It was a pretty even split.

I feel like mega evolution is a horribly designed mechanic in single player that trivializes every fight in the game. The best moment I’ve had with megas was when Giovanni mega evolved his Mewtwo in USUM purely because of the “oh shit” factor. Although the only games that allowed megas throughout most of the story was XY and ORAS which are the easiest games in the series partly because of mega evolution. As for competitive I don’t have much experience post gen 5 so I can’t say much.

I really hate Dynamax/Gigantamax but it'd probably be better for competitive than megas. Since you can do it on any of your mons, and so can your opponent, it'll be fun to do mindgames like that.

Megas didn't have Dex entries in Gen 6. And the official websites for both XY and ORAS were pretty tame compared to the Alola Dex.

I mean you'd think these "consequences" would show up in the games that introduced the concept, but they never do. There's no cost for using it mechanically, no side-effects during battle, and all of the characters talk about how cool and mysterious it is. Pokemon like Lucario and Rayquaza are even celebrated and worshipped as heroes. But now Mega Evolution is evil? It's so stupid, lol.

I dislike megas for several reasons. Firstly, they are temporary forms which I'm not fond of. Secondly, mega evolving takes too long so I didn't bother in-game. Thirdly, they justified omitting crossgen evolutions in GameFreak's eyes. Fourthly, a lot of them were disgustingly overpowered and unnecessary.

There are only 2 good things about them. Firstly, some of them made shitmons viable. Secondly, they created a lot of discussion (but that's not saying much since people can discuss anything).

I gave up hope that they would discontinue them but how nicely I got surprised in 7th gen. Excluding that retarded Greninja.

Mega evolution is only bad when the trainer and pokemon aren't in sync/properly friends/etc. Ironically enough, the anime and Super Mystery Dungeon showed that properly. X and Y didn't show it off properly aside from some side mention in one conversation due to the entire game being rushed and ORAS just muddied the waters even further.
