Legend has it that they were failing miserably at making these games and couldn't even fit the Johto region on a cart. Nintendo had to send an emergency response team to recode the game, and thus ended up having enough room for Kanto too.

At the time, they thought Pokemon was like any other franchise, where people expect the scope of each sequel to grow. Then, development of Ruby for a new console, GBA, was harder then expected and they released it unfinished. The game sold well and they realized they didn’t need to go beyond with every release, they could offer just about the same amount of content everytime.

Fans are also to blame for this, we should have spoken with our wallets.

I don't even care about "muh regions" because in the end, most of the regions are the same anyways. I'd be perfectly happy with them just focusing on putting out 100+ pokemon per generation. The most fun games are the ones with a bunch of cool new monsters to catch.

Yes, I'm glad someone else gets this. My favorite gens are 1/2 and 5. 1/2 (lumped together since 2 is a direct sequel) because the concept was fresh and novel, and 5 because they really committed hard to making Pokemon games with ALL NEW mons and it felt really cool to go into a Pokemon game that felt so unfamiliar, where I wasn't looking for my old favorite mons but discovering nothing but new mons throughout the game. We need more of that. People are griping because of cutting pokemon, but I think the only problem with the cuts is not replacing them with enough new ones.
