Yes, and by Gen 2 they were already turning the Pokedex closer to a smartphone of the time. Turning the Pokedex into an app on a phone is the same basic idea as Sinnoh's Poketch.

The Pokegear was it's own thing, the various gimmick devices have always been separate from the Pokedex, unless you count the P*DA.

The Pokédex has always been the system until now.

Well, with the exception of Gen 7 which I kind of feel like was intended to be a Switch game that got rushed out for 3DS and that's why it ended up so shit as a whole.

Rotom Dex being a single screen tablet which didn't exist in the 3DS line.

hm, i'm inclined to disagree, each gen's pokedex mimicked the console it was playable on. that's why each of the DS gens had a pokedex with two screens.
but the thing that trips me up is that kalos and usum had more phone-like pokedexes,but then ORAS's pokedex looked like a game boy advance.

Only in the show.

In the games you're filling it out. It's why there's so much myth and set values that we know aren't actually set values - it's a kid writing what people tell them on their journey and measuring their first captures, sending the data to the professors who take credit for all of their work.

They never tell you to unlock it, they tell you to fill it out. Two distinct terms.

I actually love the Let's Go tablet. It's got this stylized aesthetic that allows it to fit in with the rest of the Pokedexes, and other advanced tech from the series. Roto-Phone is so basic and uninspired that it hurts.
