Question for those in favor of gamefreak cutting pokemon from sword and shield. Gamefreak have stated many reasons why they had to cut pokemon, one being due to balancing issues. When sword and shield come out and players find a pokemon/ability/held item combination that becomes too overpowered, how would you feel if gamefreak removes more pokemon post game launch with updates?

The real reason is they want to make games with content again, you know shit to do in-game like BW2, Platinum, HGSS. You’re forgetting that SwSh is the first pair of games this gen. The content you’re talking about will be in the sequels/ultra changes. If SwSh do have a lot of shit to do, they’ll mention all of it before release. Keeping most of the pokemon a secret makes sense, but I see no reason for them to keep content a secret.

They cut pokémon for what ? The models are the same but upscaled, the balancing issues were cleared in alola, the content was still empty even with 71 new models to make only.
There are absolutely no real reason as to why they culled the dex.

By not spending as much time as in the last two bringing everything into the new games. It would have been accounted for in the planning stage.

Core games go through a 3-year cycle now (6 years ago XY released and we've gotten 3 New Generations in that same timeframe). Gen VIII is another Gen VI - there will be no upper (DP remakes and Let's Go 2 takes us up to 2022, when Gen IX will be nearing completion).

The actual reason they're removing Pokemon is so they can spend time making and expanding on new features instead of just re-releasing the same game for the either time. In particular, they've added massive amounts of player customization, online raid battles, the wild, an expanded version of Pokemon amie and the overworld Pokemon system as a replacement for wild battles (yes they stuck it in LGPE but it was obviously made primarily for this game). As long as the games have at least 200 Pokemon I won't complain. I'm more concerned with getting actual changes to the gameplay because I don't and won't play competitive.

From what it looks like, they don't seem to be changing battle mechanics wholesale, rather facilitating people getting into comp easier (possible nature swapping, allowing your storyline 'mons become more comp-viable, the new abilities, items and moves to change up the meta itself). I'm just hoping there's some kind of SOS-like chaning for shinies (though I think they may be re-adding ORAS-style sneaking elements, maybe something akin to Dexnav returns too).

Yes so ? They only added 70 new models so they had the time for literally everything yet the game is fucking empty, XY at least had the excuse of creating 700 3D model, they only had to make 10% of that in SM yet the game has as much content.

Pokemon Amie was basically the only significant feature (not a dumb gimmick like mega evolution or z moves). Not memeing, nothing until Switch could handle it. Nintendo were all about cheap and cheerful handhelds up until deciding to amalgamate the two into one console, Game Freak had to code SM to force-boot OG 3DS into a safe mode to be able to even run them. It's not a joke that the hardware was severely underpowered.

Creating the models is a separate issue. The issue with having 1000+ pokemon, is making them all work correctly in the game. In the case of SM, it was ~900 or whatever different models that they needed to code in and work properly.
If they're reducing that number maybe back down to 500-600, i.e. BW numbers, maybe the games will have as much content as BW, because they're not spending that much extra time making all the pokemon in the game work.
At least this is how I understand it. I think the models and balancing are surface level issues.

I know exactly what I'm getting kid - a pokémon game, featuring new pokémon, returning older ones and the same style story and gameplay that's kept me here this 23 years (now with added shinyhunting autism).
But that's the thing, unlike you, I didn't grow up with Pokémon, I grew up then Pokémon appeared. I've always seen it for the kiddy entry-level RPG it's been (having cut my teeth on Zelda II and its RPG-style gameplay, Pokémon was easy-mode). Sorry you've been too young to realise this, but Pokémon's always done this, it's why so many left after Gen II - a combination of incompatibility and "hurr, pogyemans is fur babbies haha".

The story and gameplay has changed significantly outside of the core gameplay loop. I just don't know why you'd bother when every other turn based RPG does the same thing better. Each installment has less and less content but you're trying to pretend content exists when it just isn't there.

It's a fucking pokemon game. Even retarded genwunners who have only played Gen 1 know that they're all basically the fuck same. Gameplay loop is essentially the same as it's always been, the mechanics have slightly changed but they're still relatively similar to how they were 23 years ago. People who buy a Pokemon game know exactly what they're getting into, and that's why they buy it. They want that specific experience.

4. Things to do after the game's story ends.

Only autists are going to spend 200 hours catching the ~500 pokemon that will be in this regional dex. "Gotta catch 'em all" worked for gen 1 and 2 because 150-250 was doable without wasting your life on it.
Pokemon is not the only game most people play. By the time we hit January/February most people will be done with Pokemon, and probably move on to waiting for Animal Crossing.
2 and 3 are subjective. Battles remain as fun as they always have, and I think the new designs are pretty good.
Things to do after the game's story ends we're yet to see, but most people specifically buy for the story content, not for the postgame stuff.

Yes, in revenue. Over the last 20 plus years accumulated. That mostly goes straight to tpc and nintendo.
Pokemon also has 1000s of models, considering I'm assuming you must be adding in all solid objects. But most games don't design and implement that many totally new characters every 3 years either, not even counting the human characters.
Kids think you just port the models and bam, the entire game is made. Plus people bitch about every tiny error spotted in trailers, imagine how many more errors devs would miss if they had 1000 characters to comb through.
A lot more goes into making a game than porting pokemon models, and they decided (in a joint decision with tpc and nintendo) the game itself was a bigger priority when dealing with constant short deadlines.

If they really think it's such a high priority why did they split their development team and send all of their veteran workers to work on their new IP instead of working on their multi billion dollar franchise? It doesn't matter if TPCi and Nintendo get a cut. They still have a net worth of over 30 billion dollars. They're above most AAA titles in profit but choose to have 1/10th of the workforce.

All they have to do is include a decent portion of Pokemon in the games (300 to 400 is a nice number) and balance the game around those mon. If players want to import older mon, there should be nothing to stop them from doing so like in Sun and Moon which only focus around the Pokemon in the Alola dex and if you want to bring some other mon in via Pokemon Bank, you're more than welcome to.
Cutting Pokemon out of the game's data completely seems like a very haphazard choice. Especially given that they've yet to display anything to do with models/animations of older mon or in-game activities that justify Pokemon being taken out of the in-game data period.
