That might depend on their contracts, maybe is one of the following options:
>their contract ended and they didn't bother to renew it
>they were fired since the formula failed among the target audience (and not the 20-something Amorfags)
>other projects took their focus

No writer would ever "confirm" they quit because of that. It would be extremely unprofessional. There are two options:

A) They got tired of the company and decided to move on other projects.
B) They got fired cause the ratings kept (and still keep) dropping.

It's fairly obvious that the ratings don't matter. Why else would they move Pokemon to a death timeslot against that other anime (forgot it's name but it's pretty long running and popular)
They probably were either
1. Pissed about having to make Ash lose
2. Tired of making anime about Pokemon (Likely)
