Didn't like it in particular, but the scene with the rival and the elder was a good start to your rival's story arc, and the constant optional dungeons is one of the things I appreciate about Johto.

Also, the swaying pillar in the middle in GSC is iconic.

I agree with your sentiment on optional dungeons. The more the better. Especially if it has decent items or events inside. But Sprout Tower certainly wasn't optional.

All you get is Flash, and the only things you need Flash for are more optional dungeons iirc, barring Mt. Silver if we're counting that as endgame, but with that kind of gap between Sprout to Silver, I'd still consider doing Sprout Tower then as optional.

Routes 29-31 are so short and lacking that they needed an extra place for your Pokemon to battle and train before you fight Falkner. Other than that, it adds to the Japanese aesthetic of the region, which Kanto didn't have all that much. It's also a good place to catch Gastly early-game.

It's a neat, early-game example of how people in the Johto Region revere their Pokemon. A traditional pagoda shrine, themed around this little fella.

I like it for comfy aesthetic, but hated how every trainers have same Pokemon. They made it a hard time for my totodile.
But I still like this tower more for good old experience, Gen 7 was so lacked of contents that you can't even enter the similar Japanese tower in one of Alolan cities.

For all its faults, Johto's nip aesthetic was memorable and I have fond memories of both Silver and Soul Silver. Being a place of worship themed around such an unlikely pokemon and an "optional" zone to explore only adds to its charm. I liked Ecruteak and its towers better, but it was a nice early game town.

How come japs don't mind portraying there religion in games compared to other regions? There's tons of shinto and buddhism stuff in the series I always found in interesting.

It was optional in GSC.

Crystal was my first game. As like a four year old westerner this was my first touch of like proper Japanese Culture/influence. I loved it. Totally set the tone of the region. Plus the lore is so great, because its not tied to like some legendary or something, its just a small town with this local legend. LOVE IT.
